Speaker Captain Andy Cannava
Andy has long been involved in the marine industry. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati, Andy started his river career at Beatty, Inc. where he learned salvage operations, diving, rigging and steam machinery operation. He also received his first pilot’s license under Capt. Beatty’s tutelage. He would go on to work at ACBL for 37 years as a Steersman, Pilot, Captain (all rivers), Port Captain, Marine Superintendent, and, eventually, Director of Vessel Safety, Compliance & Training. In 1990 ACBL christened the M/V Andrew Cannava, which is still a part of their fleet and operates on the Western Rivers. In 2009, Andy started at Bray Marine in Covington, in anticipation of retirement. While there he oversaw the implementation of a safety management system that greatly reduced their incident rate while they more than doubled their operations. Andy has received numerous awards for his focus on marine safety. After 50 years of working on the nation’s waterways, Andrew Cannava has been retired since late December 2015. Among other family and industry activities, Andy has served as President of the Louisville Propeller Club since 2016.

Andy will be talking with us about some of the basics of the marine industry. Those huge vessels that are a constant presence to us in recreational boating are also essential to our nation’s economy.
